Mental Health Specialist

Purpose: Ensure that appropriate settings, strategies, and dynamics are in place to support and enhance the social/emotional wellness of children, family, and staff in accordance with Head Start Performance Standards, local, state, and national standards and YWCA policies and procedures.

Job Responsibilities:

Visit classrooms throughout the program, provide support and recommendations for those children who demonstrate needs in the social emotional domain through externalizing and/or internalizing behavior. This will include but is not limited to creating (with input from team) individualized child, classroom, and family plans.

Act as first channel of intervention with families or primary home caregiver who are referred internally for mental health or social emotional crisis

Facilitate social/emotional support and growth which address the needs of children, families, and program staff.

Provide individual therapy, when necessary, and community supports are not available

Conduct environmental assessments/screenings using research based, reliable tools (e.g. TPOT, TIPITOS) to screen and support children in building social emotional competence. Monitor individualized plans for identified children and families, working collaboratively with all necessary team members.

Articulate and implement an outcome-based approach to demonstrate improvements in child(ren)'s emotional competence, family communication and teacher practices.

Provide training, education, and coaching about mental wellness and resiliency to families and staff improving relationships and facilitating healing centered engagement.

Participate as a dynamic member of various teams (Pyramid, ReST, Management, Ed Ops, FP, ERSEA) bringing voice to the needs of children, family, and program staff as they relate to concerns of mental wellness.

Monitor and maintain child plus data/reports and provide follow up to centers, ensuring necessary record keeping.

Build community partnerships both within the YWCA and the general community to facilitate access to additional resources as needed and to provide support to the community as appropriate. Identify external Mental Health resources that will become, through written agreement, agents of support for comprehensive mental health services.

Provide and/or arrange trainings/coaching that address classroom, family and individual needs as identified through screening and assessment as well as individual request from families and staff.

Promote, at all times, the competencies and expectations of trauma informed service provision (safety, trust, choice, empowerment, and collaboration).

Job Requirements:

Ability to work with diverse population and 'connect' with family members and staff.

Effective verbal/written communication and interpersonal skills paired with ability to teach complex ideas across differing literacy levels.

Management and leadership skills.

Education and Knowledge/Skills:

Master's Degree Required; License in mental health field, LPC or LCSW, LMSW

Knowledge of Early Childhood and Child development and of children birth through age five and risk factors that may impede development.

Knowledge of family systems and challenges faced when exposed to traumatic events or when growing mental wellness within an identified community (family, classroom, support team, neighborhood).

Knowledge of systems and resources that serve children with mental health concerns.

Familiarity with Head Start Performance Standards and IDEA, part B and Part C, ADA, IEP and IFSP development and 504 Plans.
